Funds and Breakdown

Last year (2023/24) we raised an amazing €186768.73. These funds were used for a huge variety of things by the individual hospitals, including medications, medical equipment and machines such as xrays and for renovations to the hospital wards or theatres. Here are the hospitals donated to over the summer of 2024:

  1. Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre
  2. Bugisi Health Centre
  3. Mwamapala Health Centre
  4. St. Luke’s Mission Hospital
  5. Diocese of Singida
  6. Brighter Communities Worldwide Ltd
  7. The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust
  8. Sacred Heart SOM
  9. Missionary Convent of Our Lady of Apostles
  10. Nkhoma Hospital

The Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic

The Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic is settled at the base of Lake Malawi in the small fishing village of Cape Maclear. It was set up by the Billy Riordan Memorial Trust led by Mags Riordan in 2004 in honour of her son Billy Riordan, a Dingle native who sadly drowned in the Lake in 1999 at the age of just 25.

The Clinic provides healthcare to the local population of 20,000. They provide not only GP services, but run antenatal clinics, cervical smears, HIV clinics, outreach clinics, vaccination programmes and feeding programmes. The clinic also has a small number of inpatient beds, a children’s ward, a female ward and a male ward where they can provide treatment to patients and monitor their condition prior to referring to the hospital.

This year Surgeon Noonan funds went towards building the maternity building which will provide expectant mothers with a safe place to give birth in their local community. Previously they would have had to travel 40 minutes to the nearest hospital in Monkey Bay on a motorcycle taxi. It is hoped this will go a long way in improving maternal mortality rates in the local area.

The clinic helps provide employment to individuals from Cape Maclear itself and is a big part of the local community, known by all the villagers as “Billys”.

Primarily a fishing village, Cape Maclear relies heavily on this and the recent return of tourism post-COVID, as its main income sources. Poverty is a major problem within the village, leading to malnourishment among the local community. The Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic plays a vital role in protecting and promoting the health of the village

St Joseph Mission Hospital, Lubwe, Zambia

Surgeon Noonan Society donated €28,000 to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Lubwe, Zambia, a donation that accounted for 55% of the hospital’s annual budget for non-salary expenses. This vital support was directed towards crucial improvements within the hospital, including the construction of a new male ward and the redevelopment of the operating theatre.

In June 2024, Ella, Gearóid, Jimmy, Peter, and Sophie from the Surgeon Noonan Society had the privilege of travelling to St. Joseph’s as part of their elective placement, to witness the impact of the donation firsthand. They observed the building of the new male ward and renovating the operating theatre, both projects made possible by the funds raised throughout the year.
